Dear Doctoral Students,
We would like to briefly summarise and clarify the key requirements for the complex exam at the Doctoral School of Psychology (PDI), with particular attention to publication regulations.
The complex exam concludes the training and research phase of doctoral studies. According to the PDI curriculum, the prerequisites for the complex exam are completion of all course requirements (84 credits) and the 24-credit “Supervised research I.” (DPSY16-SR-1).
In addition to registering for the course, students must formally apply for the complex exam in Neptun. The application requires, among other things, a research plan and a supervisor evaluation and declaration. The PDI Operational Regulations set out specific rules regarding the research and work plan to be submitted for the complex exam.
We want to emphasise that having a published or accepted paper is not a prerequisite for taking the complex exam. An accepted publication is neither mandatory nor expected at this stage.
Naturally, if you already have a published or accepted paper, that is an excellent academic achievement—and one we welcome—but please do not consider it a requirement for admission to the exam.
It is crucial to distinguish between the requirements for the complex exam and those for publishing the doctoral dissertation. The operational regulations of the Doctoral School of Psychology explicitly link the baseline publication requirements to the submission of the dissertation: “At the time of submitting the doctoral dissertation, the candidate must possess at least three scientific journal articles...”
Please also ensure you check which doctoral school’s regulations you are reading. The Doctoral School of Psychology (PDI) and the Doctoral School of Education (NDI) have their own distinct operational regulations and detailed rules; therefore, specific NDI requirements must not be automatically applied to PDI students. PDI doctoral students are governed strictly by PDI regulations.
