Thesis Topic Announcement for the applied part of the Psychology MA thesis in the spring semester of the academic year 2022/2023
The thesis topic has to be announced in Neptun before the final exam period by the student, based on the following regulations of the ARS of ELTE.
On Psychology MA programme, the thesis has two parts, a research and an applied part. Both need separate thesis topic announcements. The deadline to submit the thesis topic announcement for those Psychology MA students who would like to take the final exam in the spring semester of the academic year 2022/2023 is
the 10th of March, 4:00 p.m.
How does the topic announcement work in Neptun?In case you are currently studying on multiple programmes, or in case you have already received your absolutorium and finished your studies, you will need to select the programme, on which you desire to submit a thesis topic announcement. To do so you can find your programmes listed in your Neptun by clicking on Training at the very top on the left side. After this you may proceed to the Studies > Degree thesis / Thesis application menu, where you should choose the button for Thesis application, which can be found amongst Actions. In the appearing pop-up window please select the category that applies to you from the filter named Period with the List button:
Following this please push the Individual topic button at the bottom on the left side, after which the form titled ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE THESIS TOPIC should open. After filling out the form properly, you shall proceed with pushing the Next button, and following a throughout check of the filled out data you can finalize your topic announcement with the Submit request button. Attention! After submitting the request you won’t be able to edit or withdraw it.
You may check your topic announcement in the Thesis application window at the bottom on the left side, with the Applications button.
ATTENTION! Before making the announcement, you should consult with your chosen supervisor!
The supervisor may be a professor or researcher of the University, or it can also be an external lecturer. If the student chooses an external supervisor who does not appear in Neptun (thus cannot be chosen from the cited teachers during the topic announcement), then choosing an „internal” supervisor is also needed. The student chooses his/her topic while consulting his/her supervisor. The supervisor accepts the student’s supervisor invitation via the student’s thesis topic announcement. The topic chosen by the student and his/her supervisor will be accepted in Neptun by the director of the institute in charge of the programme or his/her appointed person.
How to choose a topic?The institutes offer possible topics every semester, for all programmes on their webpage(s) or in Neptun respectively. The student can choose from these lists, but it is possible to use a different, unique topic that the student chooses consulting his/her supervisor.
Regulations of thesis topic announcement in the ARS
(1) Organisational units responsible for the programmes (institutes, departments) must offer students thesis topics by the beginning of every semester in the Electronic Registration System, or provide the Student the option of choosing a topif of their own.
(2) The student can consult with one or more supervisors on their thesis. The supervisors can be lecturers, researchers or doctoral students of the University, or scholars not employed by the University.
(2a) In the cases of teacher training programmes subject to the provisions of Nftv., topic supervisors may be:
a) Full or part-time employees of the University, including head teachers of practising schools, or
b) other professionals with a degree in teaching or psychology working in a field related to public education.
(3) The students choose the thesis topic from the options offered in the Electronic Registration System by the organisational unit referred to under paragraph (1), or with the approval of their supervisor(s), or if the students have no supervisor(s) yet, with the approval of the Head of the organisational unit responsible for the programme.
(4) Unless a shorter deadline is specified in the Special Provisions, between choosing the thesis topic and final exam period
a) in undergraduate and graduate programmes at least 6 months,
b) in single-cycle long programmes at least 12 months must pass.
(5) The relevant organisational unit can stipulate a longer time frame to accommodate the thesis’ topic choice. The students must be notified of this in time.
(6) The decision to approve or reject the Student’s chosen thesis topic , taken in line with the Faculty’s rules of procedure, shall be entered into the Electronic Registration System within one month. A shorter deadline may be specified within the Special Provisions.
(7) Individual departments can appoint thesis referents whose job is to answer the students’ questions about writing their thesis.
(8) The student can change the topic of the thesis, but – unless a shorter deadline is specified within the Special Provisions – between changing the topic and the beginning of the final exam period
a) in undergraduate and graduate programmes at least 4 months,
b) in single-cycle long programmes at least 8 months must pass. The Head of the programme can extend this period to period defined under paragraph (4).
(9) The University is not obliged to provide a supervisor after the second change of topic, or any after that, or in the case of the termination of the student’s student status.
Section 412(1) The deadline for announcing the topic of the degree thesis is - with regard to the exemption set in this section -
a) in the case of Bachelor and specialisation courses, with the exception of the case specified in paragraph (3)
- for the final examination in the second semester 15 October,
- for the final examination in the first semester 15 May;
b) in the case of Master's Degree courses, including single-cycle courses, with the exception of the cases specified in points c) and d)
- if the final examination is in the second semester, until 15 May of the academic year prior,
- if the final examination is in the first semester, until 15 October of the academic year prior.
c) in the case of Intercultural Psychology and Pedagogy or Social Acceptance Master’s programmes
- for the final examination in the second semester 15 October,
- for the final examination in the first semester 15 May;
d) in the case of a Psychology Master’s Degree course
- in the case of the research part of a thesis written in line with the criteria valid until 2015 or the criteria valid from 2016 onwards, pursuant to the provisions laid out in point b),
- in the case of the applied part of a thesis written in line with the criteria valid from 2016 onwards, in the semester of the final examination, by Friday of the second week of the study period.
(1a) Students have one month to submit a thesis topic for an additional fee after the expiry of the topic submission period.
(2) An extended deadline - longer than set in (1) - for taking the role of a Supervisor for a degree thesis is announced by the Office of Educational Affairs after being notified by the competent educational organisational unit.
(3) In the case of non-teacher degree courses or portfolio-type degree theses - if the curriculum of the particular degree course specifically sets it as a requirement - the student does not have to choose a topic or ask for a Supervisor. For this reason there is no need for announcing the student’s degree thesis topic.
(4) It is possible to change the topic of the thesis according to Section 77 (8) after the deadline specified therein, however, in this case the student may only take the final examination in the semester following the originally targeted semester.
(5) In order to unify the requirements set in connection with degree theses the Committee for Education can lay down binding rules, which only can be applied for students starting their studies after the requirements were laid down.
